New York Yankees sweep the Boston Red Sox


The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 5-3.  J.A. Happ started for the Yankees and he pitched well, the bullpen pitched well and Clint Frazier led the offense with three hits. 

Happ pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs with a walk and four strikeouts.  Tommy Khanle picked up his first victory of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and striking out one, Adam Ottavino pitched an inning giving up two hits and a walk with a strikeout and Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning with a strikeout and picked up his third save of the season. 

Nathan Eovaldi pitched six innings giving up three hits and a run which was unearned.  He walked one and struck out six.  Brandon Workman picked up his first loss of the season pitching 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and three runs with two walks and a strikeout, Ryan Brasier pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and Heath Hembree pitched a perfect inning with a  strike out. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and four RBI, Luke Voit had a hit and drew a walk and Frazier had three hits and an RBI.  Mike Tauchman drew a walk, Austin Romine drew a walk and Frazier and Voit each hit a double.  Gardner hit a homerun and the Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.   

Xander Bogaerts had a hit, J.D. Martinez had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Steve Pearce had a hit.  Mitch Moreland had a hit and drew a walk, Rafael Devers had two hits and Christian Vasquez had a hit and two RBI.  Martinez and Vasquez each hit a homerun and the Red Sox were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Devers had a stolen base and Nunez committed an error. 

In the first Martinez hit a solo homerun to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.  In the second Vazquez hit a two-run homerun to push the Red Sox lead to 3-0.  In the fourth Frazier hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 3-1.  In the seventh Gardner hit a grand-slam to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead and that would be the final score of the game. 

The Yankees swept the brief two-game series and will remain at home to take on the Kansas City Royals in the start of a four-game series beginning on Thursday night.
