New York Mets fail to sweep the Washington Nationals


The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals on Sunday.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 7-4.  Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and he pitched well but not deep into the game.  The Mets bullpen had some issues and Jeff McNeil and Wilson Ramos each had two hits. 

deGrom pitched five innings giving up four hits and three runs with none being earned.  He walked one and struck out seven.  Luis Avilan pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and he struck out two, Brad Brach pitched to one batter and retired him and Robert Gsellman pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs and he took his third loss of the season.  Justin Wilson pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect inning with three strikeouts.  Edwin Diaz pitched an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts. 

Anibal Sanchez pitched five innings giving up seven hits and three runs with a walk and three strikeouts.  Tanner Rainey pitched 2/3 of an inning with a walk, Matt Grace pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout and he won his first game of the season.  Hunter Strickland pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one, Daniel Hudson pitched to one batter and got him out and Wander Suero pitched an inning with two strikeouts.  Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and he saved his 26th game of the season. 

McNeil had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Amed Rosario had a hit and Michael Conforto had an RBI.  Pete Alonso had a hit, J.D. Davis had a hit and Ramos had two hits.  Joe Panik had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, deGrom had a hit and McNeil hit two doubles and Ramos hti a double.  The Mets were 4-12 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Alonso and McNeil each committed an error and McNeil had an outfield assist. 

Trea Turner had a hit, Adam Eaton had a hit and drew a walk and Anthony Rendon had four hits.  Juan Soto drew two walks, Victor Robles had a hit and two RBI and Asdrubal Cabrera had two hits and two RBI.  Kurt Suzuki had a hit, Cabrera hti a double and Robles hit a homerun.  The Nationals were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Eaton had a stolen base. 

In the first Cabrera reached on a throwing error and three runs scored to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead.  In the second Panik hit an RBI single and McNeil hit a two-run double to tie the game at three.  In the seventh Cabrera hit a two-run double to give the Nationals a 5-3 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh Conforto hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 5-4.  In the ninth Robles hit a two-run homerun to give the Nationals a 7-4 lead and that was the final score. 

The Mets won two out of three in the series and will be off on Monday.  They will head to Atlanta to take on the Braves on Tuesday night.
