The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit
Tigers on Saturday afternoon. The game
took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was
5-3. Clarke Schmidt started for the Yankees,
and he pitched well, the bullpen did well and Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo led
the offense with a couple of hits each.
Schmidt pitched five innings giving
up four hits and three runs with seven strikeouts. He won his third game of the season. Caleb Ferguson pitched 1/3 of an inning
giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout, Luke Weaver pitched 2 1/3 innings
giving up a hit and he struck out four and Clay Holmes pitched 1 1/3 innings
giving up a hit and he struck out two.
Holmes earned his 11th save of the season.
Casey Mize started for the Tigers,
and he pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up nine hits and five runs with a walk and
six strikeouts. Mize lost his first game
of the season. Tyler Holton pitched 1
2/3 innings with two strikeouts and Will Vest pitched a perfect inning.
Anthony Volpe drew a walk; Juan
Soto had a hit and Judge had two hits and an RBI. Alex Verdugo had a hit; Giancarlo Stanton had
a hit and an RBI and Rizzo had two hits and three RBI. Gleyber Torres had a hit; Jose Trevino had a
hit and Judge hit a double. Rizzo hit a
homerun and the Yankees were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and left five
men on base.
Riley Greene had a hit and an RBI,
Wenceel Perez had two hits and Kerry Carpenter drew a walk. Matt Vierling had two hits and an RBI, Colt
Keith had an RBI and Andy Ibanez had a hit.
Zach McKinstry had a hit, Vierling hit a triple and Greene hit a
homerun. The Yankees were 0-2 with
runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
In the first Greene hit a solo home
run giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In the
bottom of the first Stanton hit an RBI single tying the game at one. In the bottom of the third Judge hit an RBI
double giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead and Rizzo hit a three-run home run pushing
the Yankees lead to 5-1. In the fourth
Vierling hit an RBI triple and Keith hit a sac fly cutting the Yankees lead to
5-3 and that would be the final score.
The Yankees go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon.
