The New York Mets are shutout by Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers


The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Mets on Saturday evening. The final score was 3-0 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Matt Harvey started for the Mets and limited the damage despite giving up a lot of hits. The bullpen did a pretty good job. The Mets offense only managed three hits.

Harvey pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up two runs and 13 hits. He walked none and struck out four and took his fifth loss of the season. Scott Rice faced one batter and retired him, Gonzalez Germen pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run and Pedro Feliciano pitched to one batter and retired him. Scott Atchison faced one batter and retired him.

Daniel Murphy had a hit, Ike David had two hits and drew a walk and Wilmer Flores drew a walk. Juan Lagares drew a walk, Harvey drew a walk and David hit a double. The Mets were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Young had an outfield assist.

Scherzer won his 19th game of the season pitching six innings and giving up three hits and no runs. He walked four and struck out 11. Jose Alvarez pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings, Jose Veras faced two batters and retired them both and Joaquin Benoit pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and earned his 17th save of the season.

Austin Jackson had two hits and an RBI, Omar Infante had three hits and Miguel Cabrera had two hits. Prince Fielder had a hit, Matt Tuiasosopo had two hits and Don Kelly had an RBI. Andy Dirks had three hits, Brayan Pena had a hit, Scherzer had a hit and an RBI and Dirks and Scherzer each hit a double. The Tigers were 5-17 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

Scherzer hit an RBI double and Jackson an RBI single in the second to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Kelly hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to make it 3-0 Tigers and that was the final score.

The Mets record dropped to 58-69 and the Tigers record improved to 76-53. The two teams will play the finale of their three game series on Sunday afternoon.
