The New York Yankees sweep a doubleheader from the Toronto Blue Jays


The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays twice on Tuesday. They beat them 8-4 in the afternoon and 3-2 at night with both games taking place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes pitched for the Yankees with Nova having one bad inning. Hughes pitched really well in the night game. Robinson Cano had a good day and Nix and Romine led the offense at night.

Nova pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up nine hits and four runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Nova earned his sixth win of the season. Boone Logan retired the only batter that he faced, Shawn Kelley walked two batters and retired one and David Robertson pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts. Joba Chamberlain pitched 1/3 of an inning walking a batter and Mariano Rivera pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Hughes pitched six innings giving up two runs and seven hits. He walked two and struck out six. Preston Claiborne pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out one and Rivera pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out one and picking up his fourth win of the season.

Robinson Cano had six hits and five RBI on the day, Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI and Vernon Wells had a hit and drew a walk. Alfonso Soriano and Mark Reynolds each drew a walk and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk. Curtis Granderson had a hit, Lyle Overbay drew a walk and Jayson Nix had three hits, two RBI and drew two walks. Chris Stewart had a hit and three RBI and Austin Romine had three hits. Nix, Cano and Stewart each hit a homerun. Wells, Romine, Suzuki and Cano each hit a double. Nix had a stolen base and Stewart had a passed ball. Suzuki had a stolen base and Romine had a passed ball.

The Yankees record improved to 66-59 and the Blue Jays record fell to 57-69. The two teams will play game three of four on Wednesday night.
