The New York Yankees sweep the Toronto Blue Jays


The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday evening. The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 5-3. The game didn’t start until late afternoon due to the rain. Andy Pettitte started and pitched well, the pen was shaky. Eduardo Nunez had a two run single and Curtis Granderson a homerun.

Pettitte pitched six innings giving up one run and four hits. He walked three and struck out three and won his ninth game of the season. Shawn Kelley pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs with a walk, Boone Logan struck out the only batter that he faced and Preston Claiborne pitched an inning giving up a hit. David Robertson picked up his second save of the season. He pitched a perfect inning.

Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and drew a walk, Vernon Wells had an RBI and Alfonso Soriano drew a walk. Alex Rodriguez drew a walk, Granderson had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Mark Reynolds drew a walk. Nunez had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Chris Stewart had a hit and an RBI, Suzuki hit a double and Granderson hit a homerun. The Yankees were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Rodriguez had a stolen base.

J.A. Happ pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up three hits and four runs with five walks and four strikeouts. Happ took his third loss of the season. Brad Lincoln gave up a hit and a run with a walk, Aaron Loup pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a strikeout and Neil Wagner pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out one.

Jose Reyes had two hits, Rajai Davis had a hit and drew a walk and Edward Encarnacion had an RBI. Mark DeRosa drew a walk, Brett Lawrie had a hit and J.P. Arencebia had a hit and an RBI. Moises Sierra drew a walk, Kevin Pillar had a hit and drew a walk and Munenori Kawasaki had two hits and an RBI.

Arencibia hit a homerun and the Blue Jays were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Davis had two stolen bases, Lawrie committed an error and Davis had an outfield assist.

Arencibia hit a solo homerun in the fifth to give the Jays a 1-0 lead. Granderson hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at one. Wells flew into a force out but a run scored to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Nunez hit a two run single in the sixth and Stewart had an RBI groundout. The Yankees had a 5-1 lead. The Jays scored two runs in the seventh inning to make it a 5-3 game. That was the final score. Kawasaki hit an RBI single and Encarnacion grounded into a force out and a run scored.

The Yankees swept the four game series and improved their record to 68-59. The Jays record fell to 57-71. The Yankees will head to Tampa Bay to take on the Rays in a three game weekend series.
