The New York Mets drop one to the Pittsburgh Pirates



The New York Mets were defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 5-3.  Jake deGrom started for the Mets and pitched well although he was wild.  Bobby Abreu, Lucas Duda and deGrom each had two hits. 

deGrom pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and no runs.  He walked five and struck out four, Jeurys Familia pitched to one batter and struck him out, Scott Rice pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run and Jose Valverde blew his second save and lost his first game of the season.  Valverde pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up four hits and four runs with a walk.  Valverde was released after the game, Carlos Torres pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a walk with a strikeout. 

Brandon Cumpton pitched six innings giving up seven hits and two runs with one being earned.  He walked one and struck out one.  Jared Hughes pitched a perfect inning, Tony Watson won his fifth game of the season pitching an inning with a walk and Mark Melancon pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts.  Melancon picked up his 10th save of the season. 

Juan Lagares had a hit and drew a walk, Daniel Murphy had a hit and an RBI and Curtis Granderson drew a walk.  Abreu had two hits, Duda had two hits and an RBI and deGrom had two hits.  Abreu hit a double and Duda hit a homerun.  The Mets were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Granderson committed an error. 

Neil Walker had two hits and drew a walk, Andrew McCutchen had two hits and drew two walks and Ike Davis drew a walk.  Gaby Sanchez had two hits and two RBI, Russell Martin had a hit and an RBI and Pedro Alvarez had two hits and drew a walk.  Starling Marte had a hit and drew a walk, Jose Tabata had a hit and an RBI and Watson had a hit.  Travis Snider drew a walk, Alvarez, Martin and Marte each hit a double.  Sanchez hit a homerun and the Pirates were 4-15 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base.  Tabata had a stolen base and Alvarez, Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison each committed an error. 

Murphy hit a two run single in the fifth to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.  In the eighth Sanchez hit a solo homerun and Tabata hit an RBI single to tie the game at two.  In the ninth Sanchez hit a two run single and Martin hit an RBI double to give the Pirates a 5-2 lead.  Duda hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to 5-3 but that would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night.
