Michael Pineda makes an impressive spring debut in New York Yankees win



The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by the score of 4-3 on Monday afternoon.  The game took place at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.  Michael Pineda made his spring debut for the Yankees and breezed through two innings.  Nathan Eovaldi was also impressive in three strong innings following Pineda.  Alex Rodriguez had a couple of hits and an RBI. 

Pineda picked up the win pitching two innings and giving up a hit with two strikeouts.  Eovaldi pitched three innings giving up three hits and he struck out five, David Carpenter pitched an inning with a walk and he struck out one and Justin Wilson pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.  Diego Moreno pitched an inning giving up two hits and three runs with a walk and a strikeout.  Chris Martin picked up the save pitching an inning and giving up a hit and he struck out two batters. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Slade Heathcott had a hit and an RBI and Carlos Beltran drew a walk.  Tyler Austin drew a walk, Greg Bird had a hit and an RBI and Brian McCann had a hit.  Austin Romine had a hit and drew a walk, Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI and Stephen Drew had a walk.  Rob Refsnyder had a hit, Didi Gregorius had an RBI and McCann and Bird each hit a double.  The Yankees were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Refsnyder had a stolen base and committed an error.  In the second inning Rodriguez hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second inning Gregorius hit an RBI groundout to increase the Yankees lead to 2-0.  The Yankees extended their lead to 3-0 in the seventh on a Heathcott RBI single and then 4-0 on a Bird RBI double.  In the eighth Taylor Motter grounded out to get the Rays on the board at 4-1.  Eugenio Velez hit an RBI single to make it 4-2 and Jake Elmore hit an RBI single to make it a 4-3 game but that was the final score.  The Yankees will head to Sarasota on Tuesday to take on the Baltimore Orioles.
