The New York Yankees played a split
squad on Saturday afternoon. They
defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-1 at home in Tampa and lost 1-0 to the Toronto
Blue Jays in Dunedin. Michael Pineda
started the home game and was very good and Esmil Rogers started the road game
and was very good. Chase Headley had two
hits in the home game and Alex Rodriguez had a hit in the road game.
Pineda pitched three innings giving
up a walk and striking out four. Dellin
Betances pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run, Andrew Miller pitched
an inning striking out two and Nick Rumbelow got the win pitching 1 1/3 innings
walking one and striking out two. James
Pazos pitched 2/3 of an inning, Jaren Long pitched an inning giving up a hit
and striking out two and Jared Burton pitched an inning striking out one and
saving his second game of the spring.
In the road game Rogers pitched
three innings giving up four hits and striking out three. Chris Martin pitched an inning giving up a
hit and striking out two, Danny Burawa pitched an inning giving up a hit and a
walk with a strikeout and Tyler Webb took the loss pitching an inning and
giving up two hits and a run with a walk.
Cesar Vargas pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a
strikeout and Diego Moreno pitched an inning giving up a walk and he struck out
two.
The offense at home was led by
Headley with two hits. Didi Gregorius
had a hit and an RBI, Jonathan Galvez drew a walk and Stephen Drew had a
hit. Mark Teixeira had an RBI, Austin
Romine had a hit and Tyler Austin had a hit.
Ramon Flores had a hit, Mason Williams had a hit and Headley and Austin
hit a double and Williams hit a triple.
The Yankees were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men
on base. Slade Heathcott had two stolen
bases and Pineda had a pickoff.
The offense in the road game didn't
produce much. Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit,
Michael O'Neill had a hit and Rodriguez had a hit. Chris Young had a hit and drew a walk, Eddy
Rodriguez drew a walk and Cole Figueroa had a hit. Figueroa hit a double and the Yankees were
0-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. O'Neill had a stolen base and Ellsbury was
picked off. Gardner had an outfield
assist.
The only run scored in the road
game was an RBI single by Caleb Gindl in the sixth inning. In the home game Gregorius hit a sac fly in
the third to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
IN the fourth Josh Wilson hit an RBI ground out to tie the game at
one. In the sixth Teixeira hit into a
force out to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead as two runs scored on the play. There was an error involved and a runner
thrown out at second. In the seventh a
balk scored the final run of the game to make it 4-1 which was the final score.
The Yankees will take on the
Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon in Tampa. They will then have their first day off of
spring training before resuming Tuesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays in
Tampa.
