The New York Mets defeated the
Washington Nationals on Monday afternoon.
The game took place at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the final
score was 8-5. Jon Niese started for the
Mets and he pitched poorly. The Mets
bullpen was very good and Yoenis Cespedes had three hits to lead the
offense.
Niese pitched 3 1/3 innings giving
up seven hits and five runs with three walks and a strikeout. Carlos Torres pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up
two hits and a walk with a strikeout, Erik Goeddel pitched a perfect inning and
Dario Alvarez earned his first win of the season pitching to one batter and
striking him out. Hansel Robles pitched
two innings striking out four and Jeurys Familia pitched an inning giving up a
hit and struck out three.
Max Scherzer pitched six innings
giving up seven hits and five runs with six strikeouts. Blake Treinen pitched 1/3 of an inning giving
up a hit and a run and he lost his third game of the season, Felipe Rivero
pitched giving up a run and a walk without recording an out and Casey Janssen
pitched giving up a hit and a run. Matt
Thornton pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Rafael Martin pitched two
innings giving up a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.
Curtis Granderson had two hits, an
RBI and drew two walks, DAvid Wright had a hit and an RBI and Daniel Murphy had
an RBI. Cespedes had three hits and two
RBI, Michael Conforto had a hit and an RBI and Travis d'Arnaud had an RBI. Kelly Johnson had a hit and an RBI, Wilmer
Flores had two hits and Ruben Tejada had a hit.
Granderson hit two doubles, Tejada hit a double and Cespedes hit two
doubles. Conforto, Johnson and Cespedes
each hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-9 with runners in scoring position and
left five men on base.
In the second Conforto hit a solo
homerun giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. In
the second Johnson hit a solo homerun and it was 2-0 Mets. In the fourth Cespedes hit a solo homerun and
the Mets had a 3-0 lead. In the fourth
Ramos hit a grand slam and the Nationals took a 4-3 lead. Werth hit an RBI double and it was 5-3
Nationals. In the fifth Granderson hit
an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-4 Nationals.
In the sixth d'Arnaud hit a sac fly to tie the game at five. In the seventh Wright hit an RBI single and
the Mets had a 6-5 lead. Murphy hit a
sac fly and it was 7-5 Mets. Cespedes
hit an RBI double and it was 8-5 Mets in the seventh which would be the final
score. The two teams will play game two
of three on Tuesday night.
