The New York Yankees squander an oppurtunity to win and lose in extra innings to the Toronto Blue Jays



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon in game one of their doubleheader.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 9-5.  The game was tied for a while in the middle innings and then again late and the Yankees couldn't get a run home in the eighth to take the lead or in the ninth or extras to win it when one run would of won the game for them.  Michael Pineda started and pitched ok but the blew a three run lead in the fifth inning.  Brett Gardner and Chase Headley each had two hits and Brian McCann had three hits. 

Pineda pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs with two walks and five strikeouts.  Justin Wilson pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit, Dellin Betances pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with two strikeouts and Andrew Miller pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts.  Bryan Mitchell took his second loss of the season pitching 1/3 of an inning and giving up three runs and two walks with a strikeout, Chasen Shreve pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with three walks and a strikeout and Nick Goody pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Marco Estrada pitched five innings giving up six hits and four runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  Mark Lowe pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Aaron Sanchez pitched an inning giving up a run and two walks and Brett Cecil pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit.  Roberto Osuna pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk, Aaron Loup pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out a batter and Liam Hendricks picked up his fifth win of the season pitching 1/3 of an inning and giving up two hits.  Ryan Tepera pitched an inning picking up his first save of the season and striking out a batter. 

Jacoby Ellsbury drew a walk, Gardner had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Carlos Beltran had a hit.  McCann had three hits and an RBI, Alex Rodriguez had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and Headley had two hits and an RBI.  Greg Bird had a hit, Stephen Drew had a walk and Bird hit a double.  Gardner, Headley and Rodriguez each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Rico Noel had a stolen base. 

Ben Revere had two hits and two RBI, Josh Donaldson had an RBI and drew a walk and Jose Bautista had three hits, three RBI and drew two walks.  Edward Encarnacion had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Cliff Pennington had a hit and Chris Colabello had a hit and drew a walk.  Dioner Navarro had a hit and drew a walk, Ryan Goins had a hit and Russell Martin had an RBI and drew a walk.  Bautista hit two homeruns, Revere and Encarnacion each hit a homerun.  The Blue Jays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. 

In the first Gardner hit a homerun to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second Headley hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  Bautista hit a solo homerun in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the bottom of the fourth the Yankees answered with a two run homerun from Rodriguez to increase their lead to 4-1.  In the fifth Revere hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 4-2 and Encarnacion hit a two run homerun to tie the game at four.  In the eighth Bautista hit a solo homerun to give the Jays a 5-4 lead.  In the bottom of the eighth the Yankees tied it at five with a McCann RBI single but left the bases loaded with one out.  In the 11th the Jays scored four runs to take a 9-5 lead and that would be the final score.  Martin drew an RBI walk, Revere hit an RBI single, Donaldson drew an RBI walk and Bautista drew an RBI walk.  The Blue Jays have taken the first two games of the series and will play game two half an hour after the first game ended and then end the series on Sunday afternoon.
