The New York Yankees win as Ivan Nova has his first shaky start



The New  York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Century Link Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida and the final score was 6-4.  Ivan Nova started and didn't pitch very well.  Ronald Torreyes led the Yankees offense with a couple of hits. 

Nova pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs with three walks and two strikeouts.  Bryan Mitchell pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up no hits and no runs with two strikeouts, Anthony Swarzak pitched an inning giving up a hit and Johnny Barbato pitched an inning with a strikeout.   

Brett Gardner had an RBI and drew a walk, Dustin Fowler had a hit and Aaron Hicks had an RBI and drew a walk.  Cesar Puello had a hit and an RBI, Brian McCann had an RBI and Chase Headley had a hit.  Deibinson Romero drew a walk, Eddy Rodriguez had a hit and an RBI and Pete Kozma drew a walk.  Torreyes had two hits, Headley and Rodriguez each hit a double and Puello hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Gamel had a stolen base and Hicks had an outfield assist. 

In the second Eduardo Escobar had an RBI groundout to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.  John Ryan Murphy hit an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.  In the third Gardner drew an RBI walk and Hicks hit a sac fly to tie the game at two.  McCann hit an RBI groundout and the Yankees had a 3-2 lead all in the third inning.  In the fifth the Yankees scored on a balk to push the lead to 4-2.  The Twins tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Mauer two run single.  Puello hit a solo homerun in the eighth and Rodriguez hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees will have off on Monday and then take on the New York Mets on Tuesday night in Tampa.  They are now 8-9 on the spring with a couple of ties.
