New York Mets complete the four game sweep of the Chicago Cubs



The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 14-3.  Noah Syndergaard started for the Mets and pitched well and Wilmer Flores led the offense with six hits and four RBI. 

Syndergaard started and pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and a run with eight strikeouts.  He earned his ninth win of the season.  Antonio Bastardo pitched an inning giving up a hit and Logan Verrett pitched an inning giving up three hits and two runs with one of them being earned.  He struck out one. 

Jon Lester lost his fourth game of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up nine hits and eight runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  Spencer Patton pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs with three walks and three strikeouts.  Joel Peralta pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up three hits and two runs with three strikeouts and Miguel Montero pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up four hits and a run. 

Juan Lagares had two hits, Curtis Granderson had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Yoenis Cespedes had two hits and an RBI.  Neil Walker had two hits and an RBI, Kelly Johnson had two hits and two RBI and Flores had six hits and four RBI.  James Loney had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks, Matt Reynolds had a hit and Rene Rivera had two hits and three RBI.  Syndergaard had a hit and drew a walk, Reynolds, Lagares and Syndergaard each hit a double and Granderson, rivera and Johnson each hit a homerun.  Flores hit two homeruns and the Mets were 8-18 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base.  Flores committed an error.  Syndergaard had a pickoff. 

Addison Russell had two hits, Jason Heyward had a hit and Albert Almora Jr. had two hits.  Anthony Rizzo had a hit and an RBI, Willson Contreras had a hit and an RBI and Jeimer Candelario had a hit.  Javier Baez had three hits, Heyward and Baez each hit a double and Contreras hit a homerun.  The Cubs were 2-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Baez was picked off. 

In the first Rizzo hit an RBI single to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first Gardnerson hit a solo homerun to tie the game at one.  In the second Flores hit a solo homerun, Rivera hit a two run homerun and Granderson hit an RBI single to make it 5-1 Mets.  Cespedes hit an RBI single, Walker hit an RBI single and Flores hit an RBI single and it was 8-1 Mets still in the second inning.  In the fourth Rivera hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-1.  In the fifth Flores hit a two run homerun and the rout was on at 11-1.  In the seventh Johnson hit a two run homerun to make it a 13-1 game.  Loney hit an RBI single in the eighth to extend the lead to 14-1 and in the ninth the Cubs scored a couple to make it 14-3 which would be the final score. 

The Mets left off where they did in October by sweeping the four game series.  They will remain at home and take on the Miami Marlins on Monday afternoon in the first of three games.
