New York Mets split a double header with the Washington Nationals


The New York Mets played a double header on Sunday and split it.  They lost the first game and won the second game.  The games were played at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the final scores were 5-4 and 6-5.  In the first game Seth Lugo started and pitched ok, he just didn’t last very long.  Jose Reyes had three hits and Juan Lagares and Brandon Nimmo each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Lugo pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs.  He walked none and struck out five.  Josh Smoker pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings, Hansel Robles pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and two runs with three walks and he took his fifth loss of the season and Chasen Bradford pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk and he struck out one.  Erik Goeddel pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout. 

Tanner Roark started for the Nationals and he pitched six innings giving up five hits and three runs with nine strikeouts and picked up his 11th win.  Matt Albers pitched an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one, Shawn Kelley pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Joe Blanton pitched to one batter and retired him.  Sean Doolittle saved his 16th game of the season and pitched an inning giving up three hits and a run. 

Reyes had three hits and an RBI, Lagares had two hits and an RBI and Nimmo had two hits and two RBI.  Travis d’Arnaud had a hit, Kevin Plawecki had a hit and Gavin Cecchini had a hit.  Matt Reynolds had a hit, Lagares hit a double and Niimmo hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Reyes had a stolen base. 

Wilmer Difo had two hits, Daniel Murphy had a hit and Anthony Rendon had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Adam Lind had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Michael Taylor had an RBI and drew a walk and Andrew Stevenson had an RBI and drew a walk.  Lind hit a homerun and the Nationals were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Rendon had a stolen base. 

In the fourth Rendon hit an RBI single and Lind hit a sac fly to make it 2-0.  In the sixth Lagares hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1.  Nimmo hit a two-run homerun and the Mets took a 3-2 lead.  In the bottom of the sixth Taylor had an RBI walk, Stevenson had an RBI walk and the Nationals took a 4-3 lead.  In the eighth Lind hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 5-3.  In the ninth Reyes hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4 and that would be the final score. 

Tommy Milone started the second game and pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up six hits and a run walkine one and striking out five.  Hansel Robles pitched to two guys and struck them both out, Rafael Montero pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a walk, Josh Smoker pitched to one guy and walked him and Paul Sewald pitched an inning giving up three hits and two runs.  Jerry Blevins pitched to two guys and retired them both winning his sixth game of the season and AJ Ramos pitched two innings giving up three hits and a walk with two strikeouts and earning his 25th save of the season. 

Erick Fedde pitched six innings giving up seven hits and five runs with two walks and five strikeouts.  Kelley pitched a perfect inning, Blanton lost his third game of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout and Sammy Solis pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk.  Albers pitched to one guy and retired him. 

Nimmo had a hit, Lagares had two hits and Asdrubal Cabrera had a hit, three RBI and drew two walks.  Wilmer Flores had a hit and two RBI, Amed Rosario had two hits and an RBI and Matt Reynolds had two hits.  Jose Reyes drew a walk, Cabrera hit a homerun and Flores hit a homerun.  The Mets were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Lagares had a stolen base and d’Arnaud committed an error, Lagares had an outfield assist. 

Howie Kendrick had three hits and an RBI, Difo had a hit and an RBI and Ryan Zimmerman had a hit and drew a walk.  Matt Wieters had two hits, Taylor had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks and Alejandro De Aza had two hits and two RBI.  Rafael Bautista had two hits, Lind had a hit and Stevenson drew a walk.  Murphy had a hit, De Aza, Taylor and Murphy each hit a double.  De Aza hit a triple and the Nationals were 5-16 with runners in scoring position and they left 13 men on base.  Taylor had a stolen base. 

In the first Cabrera hit a three-run homerun to give them the lead.  In the third Flores hit a two-run homerun to push the lead to 5-0.  In the bottom of the fifth Difo hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-1.  In the sixth De Aza hit an RBI double, Kendrick hit a sac fly and it was 5-3.  In the seventh Taylor hit an RBI double and De Aza a sac fly to tie the game at five.  In the eighth Rosario hit a solo homerun to give the Mets a 6-5 lead and that would be the final score.
