New York Yankees sweep the Minnesota Twins


The New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 11-3.  Luis Severino started and he didn’t pitch well, the bullpen did pitch well.  Gary Sanchez, Jacoby Ellsbury and Greg Bird had three hits each to lead the offense. 

Severino pitched three innings giving up five hits and three runs.  He walked one and struck out three.  Chasen Shreve picked up his fourth win of the season pitching three innings and giving up a walk with three strikeouts, Ben Heller pitched an inning giving up a hit and Domingo German pitched two innings giving up a walk and he struck out four. 

Bartolo Colon pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and six runs with a walk and three strikeouts.  Colon took his 14th loss of the season.  Tyler Duffey pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs and he struck out one, Nik Turley pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a walk and Michael Tonkin pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits and he struck out three.  Glen Perkins pitched an inning giving up a hit and he walked one and John Curtiss pitched an inning with a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner had two hits and an RBI, Clint Frazier had a hit and Aaron Judge had a hit, three RBI and drew a walk.  Sanchez had three hits and two RBI, Didi Gregorius had a hit and three RBI and Matt Holliday had a hit.  Ellsbury had three hits and drew a walk, Todd Frazier drew a walk and Bird had three hits and an RBI.  Ellsbury hit a double and Bird hit two doubles.  Ellsbury and C. Frazier each hit a triple and Judge, Sanchez and Gregorius each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 7-15 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. 

Brian Dozier had a hit and drew a walk, Joe Mauer had a hit and an RBI and Jorge Polanco had a hit and two RBI.  Zack Granite drew a walk, Kennys Vargas had two hits and drew a walk and Jason Castro had a hit.  The Twins were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Dozier was caught stealing. 

In the third Mauer hit an RBI single to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.  Polanco hit a two-run single and it was 3-0 Twins.  In the bottom of the third Judge and Sanchez hit back-to-back homeruns to tie the game at three.   In the fourth Bird hit an RBI double, Gardner an RBI single and Sanchez an RBI single to make it a 6-3 game.  Gregorius hit a three-run homerun and the lead was extended to 9-3.  In the fifth a wild pitch and a Judge sac fly pushed the lead to 11-3 and that would be the final score of the game. 

The Yankees swept the three-game series from the Twins who are the second wild card.  The Yankees increased their lead on the first wild card by seven games essentially sealing that up and will head to Toronto for three on Friday night.
