New York Mets avoid sweep and defeat the Washington Nationals


The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 11-5.  Steven Matz started for the Mets and he pitched ok, the bullpen was also ok.  Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Matz pitched four innings giving up three hits and three runs with a walk and six strikeouts.  Paul Sewald pitched three innings giving up a hit and a run with five strikeouts, AJ Ramos won his first game of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout and Seth Lugo pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run. 

Tanner Roark pitched seven innings giving up two hits and two runs with three walks and six strikeouts.  Ryan Madson pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up five hits and six runs with a walk and a strikeout and he lost his second game of the season, Sammy Solis pitched and gave up two runs and two walks without recording an out and A.J. Cole pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run. 

Michael Conforto had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Cespedes had two hits and four RBI and Cabrera had two hits.  Todd Frazier had a hit, two RBI and drew two walks, Adrian Gonzalez had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Jose Lobaton had an RBI and drew a walk.  Juan Lagares had a hit and two RBI, Amed Rosario drew a walk and Cabrera and Lagares each hit a double.  Cespedes hit a homerun and the Mets were 5-11 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Matz had a pickoff. 

Howie Kendrick had a hit, Bryce Harper drew a walk and Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and four RBI.  Moises Sierra had a hit and an RBI, Zimmerman hit a triple and two homeruns.  The Nationals were 1-1 with runners in scoring position.  Sierra was caught stealing and Zimmerman committed an error. 

In the first Zimmerman hit a three-run homerun to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead.  In the fourth Gonzalez hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1.  Lobaton reached on a force attempt error and a run scored to cut it to 3-2.  In the seventh Sierra hit a sac fly to push the lead to 4-2.  In the eighth Frazier hit a two-run single to tie the game at four.  Lagares hit a two-run double, Conforto drew an RBI walk and Cespedes hit a grand-slam making it a 11-4 game.  In the ninth Zimmerman hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 11-5 but that would be the final score. 
The Mets salvaged the final game of the series and will now head to Atlanta to begin a four game series
