New York Mets get crushed by the Toronto Blue Jays to split the brief series


The New York Mets were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 12-1.  Zach Wheeler started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch well, the bullpen had some good and some bad.  Wilmer Flores had two hits to lead the offense which only had four total hits.  

Wheeler pitched four innings giving up seven hits and six runs with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Wheeler lost his third game of the season.  Robert Gsellman pitched an inning with a walk and a strikeout, AJ Ramos pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up four hits and three runs with a walk and Jacob Rhame pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk.  Buddy Baumann pitched two innings giving up three hits and three runs with three strikeouts. 

J.A. Happ won his fifth game of the season pitching seven innings and giving up two hits and no runs.  He walked none and struck out ten.  Aaron Loup pitched an inning with a strikeout and Danny Barnes pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run and he struck out one. 

Brandon Nimmo had a hit and an RBI, Flores had two hits and Luis Guillorme had a hit.  Flores hit a double and Nimmo hit a homerun.  The Mets were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Curtis Granderson had two hits and drew a walk, Dominic Smith had a hit and Josh Donaldson had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk.  Richard Urena had a hit and three RBI, Justin Smoak had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk.  Teoscar Hernandez had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk, Kevin Pillar had two hits and an RBI and Luke Maile had two hits and drew a walk.  Happ had two hits and drew a walk, Granderson hit two doubles and Smoak and Smith each hit a double.  Smoak, Hernandez and Urena each hit a homerun.  The Blue Jays were 5-13 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

In the first Smoak hit a solo homerun to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Hernandez hit a two-run homerun to push the lead to 3-0.  In the fifth Donaldson hit an RBI single, Smoak hit a two-run double and it was 6-0 Jays.  In the sixth Donaldson hit a sac fly, Hernandez hit an RBI single and Pillar hit an RBI single to make it a 9-0 game.  In the ninth Urena hit a three-run homerun to extend the lead to 12-0 and in the bottom of the ninth Nimmo hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 12-1 which would be the final score. 

The two teams split the brief two-game series.  The Mets will be off on Thursday before hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks for a weekend series.
