The New York Yankees were defeated
by the Houston Astros on Monday night. The
game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score
was 5-1. Domingo German started for the
Yankees and he didn’t pitch great but he did battle and the pen was good. Greg Bird and Didi Gregorius each had two
hits to lead the offense.
German lost his third game of the
season pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up five hits and four runs with three
of them being earned. He walked two and
struck out seven. A.J. Cole pitched 2
1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run and Tommy Khanle pitched a perfect
inning with a strikeout.
Justin Verlander won his seventh
game of the season pitching 6 2/3 innings and giving up five hits and a run
with five strikeouts. Will Harris pitched
to one batter and struck him out, Chris Devenski pitched an inning giving up a
hit and he struck out two and Ken Giles pitched an inning giving up a hit and
striking out one.
Bird had two hits and an RBI,
Gleyber Torres had a hit and Gregorius had two hits. Miguel Andujar had a hit, Neil Walker had a
hit and Bird hit a homerun. The Yankees were 0-4 with runners in scoring
position and left six men on base.
Gregorius had a stolen base and Torres was picked off. Torres committed an error and Gardner had an
outfield assist.
Jose Altuve had a hit and an RBI,
Yuri Gurriel had two hits and Marwin Gonzalez had two hits. Evan Gattis had a hit, an RBI and drew two
walks, J.D. Davis had a hit and three RBI and Gonzalez hit a double and Davis and
Altuve each hit a homerun. The Astros
were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Verlander had a pickoff.
In the second Davis hit a three-run
homerun to give the Astros a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth Gattis hit an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0. In the seventh Bird hit a solo homerun to cut
the lead to 4-1. In the eighth Altuve
hit a solo homerun to extend the lead to 5-1 and that would be the final
score.
The two teams will play game two of
three on Tuesday night.
