The New York Mets shutout the Miami Marlins


The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins on Monday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 2-0.  Jason Vargas started for the Mets and pitched well, the bullpen also pitched well.  Asdrubal Cabrera and Michael Conforto each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Vargas won his first game of the season pitching five innings and giving up two hits and no runs with a walk and seven strikeouts.  Paul Sewald pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk, Jerry Blevins pitched to one batter and walked him and AJ Ramos pitched 1 1/3 innings with a walk and two strikeouts.  Seth Lugo pitched an inning giving up a hit and Jeurys Familia pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one and saved his 13th game of the season. 

Elieser Hernandez pitched five innings giving up five hits and a run with no walks and three strikeouts.  He lost his first game of the season.  Adam Conley pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one, Nick Wittgren pitched an inning giving up two hits and a unearned run and Tayron Guerrero pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk. 

Cabrera had two hits and an RBI, Jay Bruce had a hit and Conforto had two hits.  Adrian Gonzalez drew a walk, Devin Mesoraco had a hit and Phillip Evans had a hit.  Wilmer Flores had a hit and an RBI, Amed Rosario had a hit and Cabrera and Mesoraco each hit a double.  The Mets were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Conforto was caught stealing. 

Martin Prado had a hit, Starlin Castro had two hits and Brian Anderson drew a walk.  Justin Bour drew a walk, Cameron Maybin drew a walk and Derek Dietrich had a hit.  Miguel Rojas had a hit and drew a walk, Dietrich hit a double and Castro hit a triple.  The Marlins were 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Castro had a stolen base and Prado committed an error. 

In the third Cabrera hit an RBI double to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the seventh Flores hit an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0 and that was the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night.
