New York Yankees defeat the Cleveland Indians in battle of aces that doesn't live up to it


The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.  The game took place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio and the final score was 7-4.  Luis Severino started for the Yankees and he wasn’t at his best.  The bullpen was great and Brett Gardner and Miguel Andujar each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Severino pitched five innings giving up nine this and four runs with a walk and a strikeout.  Adam Warren pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, David Robertson won his sixth game of the season pitching a perfect inning and Dellin Betances pitched an inning with a walk and a strikeout.  Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning with a strikeout and he saved his 25th game of the season.

Corey Kluber pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up eight hits and six runs with two walks and nine strikeouts.  Kluber lost his fifth game of the season.  Oliver Perez pitched to one batter and got him out, Neil Ramirez pitched 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout and Tyler Olson pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout.  Zach McAllister pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Gardner had two hits and three RBI, Aaron Judge had a hit and Didi Gregorius had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Giancarlo Stanton had a hit, Aaron Hicks had a hit and an RBI and Greg Bird had a hit and two RBI.  Andujar had two hits and drew a walk, Andujar, Bird, Judge and Hicks each hit a double and Gardner hit two homeruns and Gregorius hit a homerun.    The Yankees were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Hicks had a stolen base and Walker committed an error and Gardner had an outfield assist. 

Francisco Lindor had two hits, Michael Brantley had a hit and Jose Ramirez had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk.  Edwin Encarnacion had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Yonder Alonso had two hits and an RBI, Yan Gomes had a hit and Lindor hit a double.  Encarnacion and Ramirez each hit a homerun and the Indians were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Brantley had a stolen base and Ramirez was caught stealing.  Gomes committed an error. 

In the first Ramirez hit an RBI single, Encarnacion hit a solo homerun and it was 2-0 Indians.  In the third Gardner hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at two.  In the third Alonso hit an RBI single to give the Indians a 3-2 lead.  In the fourth Gregorius hit a solo homerun to tie the game at three.  Bird hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.  In the fifth Ramirez hit a solo homerun to tie the game at four.  In the eighth Hicks hit an RBI double and Bird hit a sac fly to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.  In the ninth Gardner hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 7-4 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of four on Friday night.
