The New York Yankees sweep the Nationals with a 4-1 victory

The New York Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Yankees won their ninth straight game after sweeping their third straight series. The game took place in Washington D.C. Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and pitched very well, the offense struggled again in the clutch but they did enough to win. The Yankees did hit a couple of homeruns and scored enough to win. They continue to have problems with hitting with runners in scoring position but if they get the pitching they will win a majority of the games. 
Nova pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and a run. He walked one and struck out four, Nova earned his ninth win of the season. Boone Logan faced one batter and retired him and Rafael Soriano earned his 13th save of the season. Soriano pitched a 1-2-3 inning including a strikeout. Edwin Jackson started for the Nationals and pitched six innings giving up seven hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out one and suffered his fourth loss of the season. Tom Gorzelanny pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs, one of them being earned. He struck out a batter, Ryan Mattheus pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a walk and Mike Gonzalez pitched one inning giving up a walk and striking out two batters. Sean Burnett pitched an inning giving up a hit.

Derek Jeter had a hit, Curtis Granderson had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Robinson Cano had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks. Mark Teixeira had three hits and an RBI, Andruw Jones drew two walks and Chris Stewart had two hits. Granderson and Stewart each had a double and Teixeira had two doubles. Granderson and Cano each had a homerun. The Yankees were 0-12 with runners in scoring position and they left 12 men on base.

Bryce Harper had two hits for the Nationals. Adam LaRoche had two hits and an RBI, Ian Desmond had a hit and Danny Espinosa had a hit and drew a walk. Solano had a hit, Harper and LaRoche each had a double. LaRoche had a homerun and the Nationals were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and they left six men on base. Desmond had an error and Solano had two passed balls.
In the first inning Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Yankees. LaRoche hit a solo homerun in the second for the Nationals to tie the game at one. In the fifth inning Granderson hit a solo homerun to put the Yankees ahead 2-1. Cano hit a solo homerun in the seventh and a passed ball scored another run to make it 4-1 which would be the final score.

The Yankees record improved to 40-25 and they completed a perfect six game road trip. The Yankees have won nine straight games including three straight three game sweeps. They will head home and face the Atlanta Braves for three games beginning Monday night. The Nationals came into this series on a six game winning streak and now have lost three straight. Their record now stands at 38-26.
