The New York Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 5-3 on Saturday evening. The game was a marathon game that lasted 14 innings. Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees and pitched very well, the Yankees bullpen was great. Mark Teixeira had the big hit for the Yankees offense. Jordan Zimmerman started for the Nationals and pitched pretty well, their bullpen was also great. Jesus Flores led their offense, Bryce Harper had a tough day going 0-7 with five strikeouts.
Pettitte pitched seven innings giving up five hits and two runs with three walks and six strikeouts. Cory Wade pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk, Boone Logan pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and Clay Rapada pitched to one batter and struck him out. Cody Eppley pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk and striking out two, Freddy Garcia earned his first win of the season pitching two innings and striking out two and Rafael Soriano picked up his 12th save of the season pitching an inning and giving up two hits. Zimmerman pitched six innings giving up five hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked three and struck out six, Ross Detwiler pitched two innings, walking two and striking out one and Tyler Clippard pitched an inning walking two and striking out one. Sean Burnett pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Stammen pitched three innings giving up a walk and striking out two and Brad Lidge lost his first game of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out two. Mike Gonzalez pitched to one batter and retired him.
Derek Jeter had a hit, Curtis Granderson drew three walks and Teixeira had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk. Robinson Cano had a hit and drew three walks, Nick Swisher had two hits and drew a walk and Raul Ibanez had an RBI. Eric Chavez had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Jayson Nix had a hit. Swisher, Chavez and Teixeira each had a double. The Yankees were 2-18 with runners in scoring position and they left 13 men on base. Nix had a stolen base and Jeter committed an error. Wise had an outfield assist.
Espinosa had a hit and drew a walk, Ryan Zimmerman drew a walk and Michael Morse had a hit. Ian Desmond had a hit and an RBI, Moore had a hit and drew two walks and Adam LaRoche had a hit and drew a walk. Flores had two hits and two RBI, Zimmerman the pitcher had a hit and Steve Lombardozzi had a hit. Flores had a double, Desmond had a homerun. The Nationals were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and they left 11 men on base. Moore had a stolen base, Desmond and R. Zimmerman each committed an error. Flores had a passed ball and Xavier Nady had an outfield assist.
In the second inning Flores hit a two run double to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. In the fourth Chavez reached on an error and a run scored making it a 2-1 game. Ibanez had an RBI groundout in the sixth and Chavez hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Desmond hit a solo homerun to tie the game at three in the eighth inning. Teixeira hit a two run double in the 14th inning to complete the scoring.
The Yankees have now won eight straight games. They are now 39-25 on the season in first place in the American League East. The Yankees will be looking for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon. If the Yankees do complete the sweep it would be their third straight sweep. The Nationals record dropped to 38-25.
