Zach Wheeler pitched in a minor league game on Monday. He gave up one hit in three innings of work during a minor league game. He said on twitter that it felt good to be back in a game, felt great. This was his first game action since suffering an injury on February 27th.
Travis d’Arnaud is expected to start in AAA Las Vegas even though he is still in camp. He is having a great spring batting 345 with a 412 on base percentage. Any player on the 40 man roster who is in big league camp and gets hurt within 15 days of opening day is subject to the ML disabled list. He would then be accruing service time. He is within that time frame, so if he gets hurt it would not benefit the Mets but they are taking that risk because they think he will benefit from being with the major league staff.
Matt Harvey pitched well on Monday. He now has 24 strikeouts in 18 innings this spring. Ruben Tejada after going 0-3 is 3-34 this spring. I don’t make too much out of spring stats but that is pretty bad for their shortstop.
There has been nothing announced yet but what is expected is Jon Niese to start on Opening day. Shaun Marcum and Matt Harvey will pitch the next two games after that. David Wright will be named captain officially pretty soon. It could happen before Opening day and he will become the fourth captain in team history. I don’t think it really matters because everyone knows he is the leader of the Mets and is the captain if it is put on his uniform or not.
Justin Turner hurt his ankle on Saturday and hopes to play in a game by Thursday. Wright insists he will be ready for Opening Day. If Daniel Murphy doesn’t play soon he could miss Opening Day.
