The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The game took place at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. Vidal Nuno started for the Yankees and pitched great, Dave Robertson and Joba Chamberlain also pitched well. Eduardo Nunez, Jayson Nix and Chris Stewart each had a hit and an RBI.
Nuno picked up his first win of the spring, he has been great all spring and opened some eyes. He pitched five innings giving up two hits and no runs with a walk and a strikeout. Robertson pitched an inning giving up a hit and struck out one, Chamberlain pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Josh Spence retired the only batter that he faced. Cody Eppley pitched to two batters and retired them both with a strikeout and Mark Montgomery pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.
Brett Gardner drew a walk, Nunez had a hit and an RBI and Juan Rivera had a hit. Dan Johnson drew a walk, Ben Francisco had a hit and Nix had a hit and an RBI. Stewart had a hit and an RBI, Thomas Neal had a hit and Melky Mesa had a hit. Francisco hit a double and the Yankees were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and they left six men on base. Mesa was caught stealing. Nunez committed an error.
Felix Doubront started for the Red Sox and picked up the loss. He pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and four runs with a walk and five strikeouts. Andrew Bailey pitched to two batters retiring them both, one by strikeout, Joel Hanrahan pitched a perfect inning and Clayton Mortensen pitched a perfect inning. Andrew Miller pitched an inning giving up a walk and striking out one.
Brock Holt had a hit, Daniel Nava had a hit and drew a walk and Jackie Bradley had two hits. Bradley hit a double and the Red Sox were 0-2 with runners in scoring position and they left four men on base. Sutton and Carp each committed an error.
The Yankees scored all of the runs in the game in the second inning. Nix hit a sacrifice fly, Stewart had an RBI single, a wild pitch scored the third run and Nunez hit a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring. The final was 4-0.
The Yankees improved their record to 10-15 on the spring and the Red Sox record dropped to 13-12. The Yankees will host the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night and the Red Sox will host the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.
