The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins by the score of 4-2 on Friday night. The game took place at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched ok although his control wasn’t very good. The Mets bullpen was outstanding, Andrew Brown and Omar Quintanilla each had a couple of hits.
Niese pitched five innings giving up four hits and two runs with four walks and five strikeouts. LaTroy Hawkins pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one, Pedro Feliciano faced one batter and retired him and Robert Carson picked up the win pitching a perfect inning. Scott Atchison pitched an inning giving up two hits and a walk and Scott Rice pitched an inning walking one.
Jordany Valdespin had a hit, Mike Baxter had a hit and Brown had two hits and an RBI. Anthony Recker had a hit and an RBI, Brandon Hicks drew two walks and Quintanilla had two hits. Brian Bixler had a hit and drew a walk, Josh Rodriguez had a hit and two RBI and Bixler and Recker each hit a double. Valdespin hit a triple and the Mets were 3-13 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Hicks had a stolen base, Cowgill committed an error and Baxter had an outfield assist.
Ricky Nolasco pitched six innings giving up four hits and an run with two walks and five strikeouts. Chad Qualls pitched an inning giving up a hit and two strikeouts, Ryan Webb pitched an inning giving up four hits and three runs with a walk and two strikeouts and Steve Cishek pitched a perfect inning.
Juan Pierre had a hit and drew a walk, Giancarlo Stanton drew two walks and Casey Kotchman had a hit and drew a walk. Austin Kearns drew a walk, Chris Valaika drew a walk and Rob Brantly had two hits and an RBI. Nick Green had a hit and an RBI, Greg Dobbs had a hit and the Marlins were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base. Kotchman was caught stealing, Brantly committed an error and Stanton had an outfield assist.
Brown hit an RBI single in the first to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Brantly and Green hit RBI singles to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Recker hit an RBI double and Rodriguez hit a two run single to make it a 4-2 Mets lead and that would be the final score.
The Mets record improved to 10-11 on the spring and the Marlins record dropped to 10-13. The Mets will play at home against the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon and the Marlins will play at home against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.
