The New York Mets were defeated by the Miami Marlins by the score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The game took place at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Shaun Marcum started for the Mets and pitched ok. The Mets offense managed five hits but no one had more then one.
Marcum pitched four innings giving up five hits and two runs with a walk and he took the loss. Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect inning, Pedro Feliciano pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and Greg Burke pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Jeurys Familia pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with three walks and two strikeouts and Dylan Owen faced two batters and retired them both.
Henderson Alvarez pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout. He got the win, Kevin Slowey pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with two walks and four strikeouts and Mike Dunn pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts.
Mike Baxter had a hit and drew a walk, Justin Turner had a hit and Ike Davis had a hit and drew a walk. Marlon Byrd had a hit, Lucas Duda had an RBI and Travis d’Arnaud had a hit and drew a walk. Omar Quintanilla had an RBI, Byrd and D’arnaud hit a double. The Mets were 0-7 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Baxter had a stolen base and Turner committed an error.
Chone Figgins had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Placido Polanco had two hits and Justin Ruggiano had a hit. Christian Yelich had a hit and an RBI, Chris Coghlan had two hits and an RBI and Donovan Solano had an RBI. Casey Kotchman had two hits and drew a walk, Kevin Kouzmanoff drew a walk and Bryan Peterson drew a walk. Polanco and Kotchman each hit a double, Coghlan hit a triple and Yelich hit a homerun. The Marlins were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Petersen was caught stealing.
In the fourth Coghlan hit an RBI triple and Solano hit an RBI groundout to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. Duda hit an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 2-1. Figgins hit an RBI single in the seventh to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead and the Mets answered right back to make it 3-2. Quintanilla had an RBI groundout. The Marlins scored the final run of the game in the eighth. Yelich hit a solo homerun and the final score was 4-2 Marlins.
The Mets record dropped to 7-9 on the spring and the Marlins improved to 8-10. The Mets will host the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon and the Marlins will host the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
