Yankees fail to sweep as the Anaheim Angels salvage the final game


The Anaheim Angels defeated the New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon. The final score of the game was 8-4 and the game took place at Yankee Stadium. Phil Hughes started and pitched ok, the bullpen was bad. Alfonso Soriano led the offense again with four hits and another RBI.

Hughes pitched six innings giving up three runs and six hits. He walked one and struck out five and lost his 12th game of the season. Shawn Kelley pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout, Boone Logan pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and three runs with two walks and a strikeout and Joba Chamberlain pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout. Adam Warren pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew a walk, Soriano had four hits and an RBI and Robinson Cano had three hits and an RBI. Alex Rodriguez had two hits, Vernon Wells had a hit and two RBI and Curtis Granderson had a hit and drew two walks. Eduardo Nunez had two hits, Austin Romine had a hit and Cano and Wells each hit a double. Gardner hit a triple and the Yankees were 5-13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base. Romine had a passed ball.

C.J. Wilson pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 11 hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts. Wilson won his 13th game of the season. Kevin Jepsen pitched to one batter and retired him, Ernesto Frieri pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two and Michael Kohn pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk. Buddy Boshers gave up a hit and a run without retiring a batter and Dane De La Rosa pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

J.B. Shuck had two hits and an RBI, Mike Trout had a hit and drew a walk and Josh Hamilton had two hits and an RBI. Erick Aybar had a hit, Mark Trumbo drew two walks and Hank Conger had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Chris Nelson had two hits and five RBI, Grant Green had two hits and Conger, Aybar, Trout and Green each hit a double. Nelson hit two homeruns and the Angels were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Shuck, Trout and Trumbo each had a stolen base and Shuck had an outfield assist.

Hamilton hit an RBI single in the first to give the Angels a 1-0 lead. In the third Soriano hit an RBI single to tie the game at one. Conger hit a sacrifice fly and Nelson hit a solo homerun in the fourth to give the Angels a 3-1 lead. In the eighth the Angels broke it open with a Nelson grand slam and Shuck RBI single to make it an 8-1 Angels lead. In the ninth the Yankees rallied for three runs and the final score was 8-4 Angels. Cano hit an RBI single and Wells a two run double.

The Yankees four game win streak ended and their record fell to 62-58. The Angels record improved to 54-66. The Yankees will begin a three game series in Boston against the Red Sox on Friday night.
