Zach Wheeler leads the New York Mets to victory in Arizona


The New York Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. The final score was 4-1 and the game took place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. Zach Wheeler started for the Mets and pitched well, the bullpen was also good. Wilmer Flores had two hits and three RBI to lead the offense.

Wheeler won his fifth game of the season pitching 6 1/3 innings giving up six hits and a run. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. Scott Rice pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout, Carlos Torres pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and a walk and Pedro Feliciano pitched to one batter and struck him out. LaTroy Hawkins saved his third game of the season pitching an inning giving up a hit and striking out two.

Eric Young Jr. had a hit and drew a walk, Juan Lagares had two hits and an RBI and Ike Davis had two hits and drew two walks. Flores had two hits and three RBI, John Buck had a hit and Justin Turner had a hit. Davis and Turner hit a double, Lagares hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Lagares had a stolen base.

Brandon McCarthy pitched seven innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and four strikeouts. McCarthy lost his sixth game of the season; David Hernandez pitched an inning giving up two hits and two runs with two walks and a strikeout. J.J. Putz pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two.

Adam Eaton had a hit, Martin Prado had two hits and Paul Goldschmidt had a hit. Aaron Hill had two hits and an RBI, Cody Ross had a hit and Wil Nieves had a hit and drew a walk. Gerardo Parra had two hits, Cliff Pennington had a hit and A.J. Pollock drew a walk. Hill hit a homerun and the Diamondbacks were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Goldschmidt had a stolen base and Parra had an outfield assist.

In the fourth Lagares hit a solo homerun to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Flores hit an RBI single to make it 2-0 Mets. Hill hit a solo homerun in the seventh to cut the lead to 2-1. Flores hit a two run single in the eighth to make it a 4-1 game and that would be the final score.

The Mets record improved to 53-61 and the Diamondbacks record fell to 59-56. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon.
