New York Yankees get thumped by the Detroit Tigers


The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 9-3 and the game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Phil Hughes started for the Yankees and didn’t pitch that well. Preston Claiborne didn’t pitch that well out of the bullpen. Lyle Overbay led the offense with a couple of hits and three RBI.

Hughes pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and four runs with no walks and six strikeouts. Hughes lost his 11th game of the season. Claiborne pitched an inning giving up four hits and four runs with a walk and two strikeouts, Joba Chamberlain pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with a strikeout and Adam Warren pitched two innings giving up three hits and no runs.

Brett Gardner had a hit, Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and Robinson Cano had a hit. Curtis Granderson drew a walk, Eduardo Nunez had a hit and Overbay had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk. Nunez hit a double and Overbay hit a homerun. The Yankees were 3-6 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base. Suzuki had a stolen base.

Anibel Sanchez won his 10th game of the season pitching seven innings and giving up four hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out eight, Drew Smyly pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Jeremy Bonderman pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and two strikeouts.

Austin Jackson had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Torii Hunter had three hits and four RBI and Miguel Cabrera had three hits and an RBI. Prince Fielder had two hits, Victor Martinez had a hit and an RBI and Don Kelly had three hits and two RBI. Alex Avila had a hit, Jose Iglesias had two hits and Martinez and Kelly each hit a double. Jackson hit a triple and Cabrera, Jackson and Hunter each hit a homerun. The Tigers were 3-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.

In the first Hunter hit a sacrifice fly giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Cabrera hit a solo homerun in the third to extend the lead to 2-0. In the fifth Jackson hit a solo homerun, Martinez hit an RBI double and Kelly hit a two run single to make it a 6-0 lead for the Tigers. Overbay hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the fifth to get the Yankees on the board and make it 6-2. In the sixth Hunter hit a three run homerun to make it a 9-2 game. The Yankees would score a run, the last of the game in the ninth. Overbay hit an RBI single to make it 9-3 which would be the final score.

The Yankees record fell to 58-57 and the Tigers record improved to 69-46. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon. It will be the rubber match as the Yankees won on Friday night and the Tigers this game. The Yankees will be looking for their first series win in a while.
