The New York Yankees breeze past the Chicago White Sox


The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox on Monday afternoon. The final score was 9-1 and the game was played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Phil Hughes started but after a two-hour rain delay he didn’t come back out. David Huff pitched very well in relief. Derek Jeter had a couple of hits and RBI and Brett Gardner had two hits.

Hughes pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and no runs. Huff pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up five hits and a run with three strikeouts. Huff earned his second win of the season. Cesar Cabral made his major league debut pitching an inning and giving up a hit with two strikeouts and Adam Warren pitched an inning walking a batter.

Gardner had two hits and an RBI, Jeter had two hits and two RBI and Robinson Cano had a hit. J.R. Murphy made his major league debut and picked up a hit, Alfonso Soriano had a hit and an RBI and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk. Vernon Wells had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Curtis Granderson drew a walk and Mark Reynolds had a hit and an RBI. Austin Romine had a hit and two RBI, Gardner hit two doubles, Rodriguez and Soriano each hit a double. The Yankees were 7-14 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Jose Quintana started and took the loss only pitching an inning and giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout. Quintana lost his fifth game and couldn’t come back after the long rain delay. Dylan Axelrod pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up eight hits and eight runs with six of them being earned. He walked two and struck out one, Jake Petricka pitched 2 2/3 innings striking out two and David Purcey pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.

Alejandro De Aza had a hit, Adam Dunn had a hit and Paul Konerko had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Avisail Garcia had a hit, Conor Gillaspie had a hit and Jordan Danks had a hit. Josh Phegley had a hit, Danks hit a double and Konerko hit a homerun. The White Sox were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. De Aza, Phegley and Dunn each committed an error.

In the first Jeter hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. In the fourth the Yankees scored eight runs to break the game open and take a 9-0 lead. Reynolds hit an RBI single, Romine hit a two run single, Gardner hit an RBI double and Jeter hit an RBI single. Soriano hit an RBI double, Wells reached on a fielder’s choice and error allowing two runs to score. Konerko hit a solo homerun in the seventh to make it 9-1 and that would be the final score.

The Yankees improved their record to 73-64 and the White Sox record dropped to 56-80. The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night.
