The New York Yankees hang on to sweep the Chicago White Sox


The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. The final score was 6-5 and the game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. CC Sabathia started and pitched well. Robinson Cano led the offense with three hits.

Sabathia pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up three runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out four and won his 13th game of the season. David Robertson pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and a walk. He gave up two runs and Mariano Rivera saved his 41st game of the season. Rivera pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out one; it was his first four out save in two years.

Brett Gardner had two hits and two RBI, Derek Jeter drew a walk and Cano had three hits and two RBI. Alfonso Soriano had an RBI and drew a walk, Curtis Granderson had a hit and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk. Lyle Overbay had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Granderson and Overbay each hit a double, Gardner hit a triple and Cano hit a homerun. The Yankees were 3-6 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Jeter committed an error.

Erik Johnson pitched six innings giving up seven hits and five runs with three of them being earned. He walked three and struck out one and lost his first game of the season. It was Johnson major league debut. Daniel Webb pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and David Purcey pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts.

Gordon Beckham had two hits and drew a walk, Paul Konerko had a hit and drew two walks and Avisail Garcia had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk. Dayan Viciedo drew a walk, Josh Phegley had a hit and two RBI and Marcus Semien had two hits and an RBI.

Garcia hit a double and the White Sox were 4-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Johnson committed an error.

In the first Garcia hit an RBI double to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead. The Yankees came right back with a run on a Cano solo homerun to tie the game at one. In the fourth Overbay hit an RBI double, Gardner hit a two run triple and Cano hit an RBI single to make it a 5-1 lead for the Yankees. Soriano hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to push the lead to 6-1. The White sox had a rally in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-5 and that was the final score. Garcia hit an RBI single, Phegley hit a two run single and Semien hit an RBI single.

The Yankees record improved to 75-64 and the White Sox record fell to 56-81. The Yankees swept the three game series and will begin a four game series with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.
