The New York Yankees fail to sweep the Baltimore Orioles as bullpen implodes
The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon. The final score was 7-3 and the game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Andy Pettitte started and pitched well. The bullpen was bad and the Yankees offense didn’t do that much damage after a good start.
Pettitte pitched 6+ innings giving up seven hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Shawn Kelley gave up two hits and two runs without recording an out and suffered his second loss of the season. Boone Logan gave up a hit and two runs with a walk, Joba Chamberlain pitched two innings giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and David Huff pitched 2/3 of an inning retiring both batters. Dellin Betances pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.
Brett Gardner had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Derek Jeter had an RBI and Alfonso Soriano had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Alex Rodriguez drew a walk, Curtis Granderson drew a walk and Mark Reynolds drew a walk. Lyle Overbay had a hit, Eduardo Nunez had two hits and Chris Stewart drew a walk. Ichiro Suzuki had a hit, Gardner hit two doubles and Nunez hit a double. The Yankees were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
Wei-Yin Chen pitched four innings giving up four hits and three runs. He walked five and struck out five. Kevin Gausman won his second game of the season pitching two innings and giving up a hit. He walked one and struck out three, Francisco Rodriguez pitched an inning striking out two, Tommy Hunter pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out one and Darren O’Day pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Nick Markakis drew a walk, Manny Machado had a hit and Adam Jones had two hits and three RBI. Michael Morse had two hits, Danny Valencia had two hits and Matt Wieters had a hit and an RBI. J.J. Hardy had two hits and three RBI and Brian Roberts had two hits. Hardy and Jones each hit a homerun and the Orioles were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base.
In the third Soriano hit an RBI single giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. In the fourth Gardner had an RBI walk and Jeter hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Yankees. The Orioles scored seven runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-3 lead. Wieters hit an RBI single, Hardy hit a three run homerun and Jones hit a three run homerun. The final score was 7-3 Orioles.
The Yankees failed to sweep the three game series and their record dropped to 72-64. The Orioles record improved to 72-63. The Yankees will begin a three game series against the Chicago White Sox on Monday afternoon.
