Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees lose to the Chicago Cubs



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois and the final score was 6-1.  Masahiro Tanaka started for the Yankees and was ok.  The Yankees offense didn't do much at all. 

Tanaka pitched six innings giving up three earned runs on eight hits.  He gave up an unearned run, a walk and struck out seven.  Tanaka suffered his first loss of the season and first of his big league career.  Preston Claiborne pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a walk, Matt Thornton pitched 1/3 of an inning and Matt Daley pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout. 

Jason Hammel won his fifth game of the season.  He pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up four hits and a run with a walk and six strikeouts.  Justin Grimm pitched to one batter and retired him, Brian Schlitter pitched a perfect inning and James Russell pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.  Neil Ramirez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Hector Rondon pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a walk. 

Brett Gardner had two hits and drew a walk, Derek Jeter had two hits and Mark Teixeira had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Brian McCann drew a walk, Yangervis Solarte had a hit and Ichiro Suzuki drew a walk.  Gardner hit a double, the Yankees were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base.  Jeter had a stolen base and Teixeira committed an error. 

Emilio Bonifacio had two hits and an RBI, Junior Lake had a hit and Anthony Rizzo drew two walks.  Starling Castro had a hit and an RBI, Luis Valbuena had three hits and Nate Schierholtz had a hit.  Mike Olt had a hit, three RBI and drew a walk, John Baker had two hits and an RBI and Valbuena hit two doubles.  Baker hit a double, Bonifacio hit a triple and the Cubs were 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

In the third Bonifacio hit an RBI single giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Olt hit an RBI single to push the Cubs lead to 2-0.  In the sixth Teixeira hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the bottom of the sixth Olt hit a sacrifice fly and Baker hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cubs a 4-1 lead.  Castro hit an RBI single in the seventh and Olt had an RBI walk to make it 6-1 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play their second and final game of the series on Wednesday afternoon.  The Yankees will then head to the other side of Chicago to start a four game series on Thursday night.
