The New York Yankees split a doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates



The New York Yankees defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in game one on Sunday afternoon.  They were defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates in game two on Sunday evening.  The games were played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and in game one the final score was 4-3 Yankees and in game two it was 5-3 Pirates.  In game one Hiroki Kuroda started and pitched pretty well and in game two Vidal Nuno started and pitched pretty well.  In game one Mark Teixeira had two RBI to lead the offense and in game two Brett Gardner, Brian Roberts and Yangervis Solarte each had two hits. 

Hiroki Kuroda in game one pitched six innings giving up three runs and five hits.  He walked two and struck out seven and picked up his third win of the season.  Matt Daley faced two batters and retired them both, Matt Thornton struck out the only batter he faced and Adam Warren pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit.  David Robertson picked up his eighth save of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. 

Charlie Morton started for the Pirates in game one and took his sixth loss of the season.  He pitched seven innings giving up six hits and four runs.  He walked one and struck out six and Wilson pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Derek Jeter had a hit and Teixeira had a hit and two RBI.  Brian McCann had a hit and an RBI, Kelly Johnson had a hit and Zoilo Almonte had a hit.  Gardner hit a double and the Yankees were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base.  Johnson had a stolen base and Almonte was picked off.  McCann had a passed ball. 

Neil Walker had two hits and two RBI, Andrew McCutchen had a hit and drew a walk and Pedro Alvarez had a hit.  Ike Davis drew a walk, Tony Sanchez had a hit and an RBI and Clint Barmes had a hit.  Barmes hit a double, Walker and Sanchez each hit a homerun.  The Pirates were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Sanchez committed an error and Morton had a pickoff. 

In the first Walker hit a solo homerun to give the PIrates a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first the Yankees took a 3-1 lead.  Teixeira hit a two run single and McCann hit an RBI single.  Gardner hit an RBI double in the second to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.  In the fifth Sanchez hit a solo homerun and Walker hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3 and that would be the final score. 

In game two Vidal Nuno pitched six innings giving up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked one and struck out five.  Alfredo Aceves pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout.  Aceves took his second loss of the season, Thornton pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run and Preston Claiborne pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk. 

Gerrit Cole pitched six innings and gave up seven hits and three runs.  He walked two and struck out eight and earned his fourth win of the season.   Bryan Morris retired both batters that he faced, Tony Watson pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up three hits and he struck out two and Mark Melancon pitched a perfect inning. 

Gardner had two hits and drew a walk, Roberts had two hits and Teixeira drew a walk.  Jeter had a hit, Solarte had two hits and an RBI and Ichiro Suzuki had a hit.  John Ryan Murphy had a hit, Brendan Ryan had a hit and an RBI, Roberts hit a double and Gardner hit a triple.  Solarte hit a homerun, the Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Gardner was picked off of third base.  Solarte and Roberts each committed an error and Suzuki and Almonte each had an outfield assist. 

Josh Harrison had two hits and an RBI, McCutchen had a hit and drew a walk and Marte had a hit and two RBI.  Jordy Mercer had two hits, Travis Snider had a hit and Ike Davis drew a walk.  Chris Stewart had a hit and two RBI.  Harrison and Mercer each hit a double and Marte and Harrison each hit a homerun.  The Pirates were 1-2 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Snider and Cole each committed an error.  Stewart had a pickoff. 

Stewart hit an RBI single in the second to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the second Murphy hit an RBI single to tie the game at one and Ryan hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.  In the sixth Marte hit a two run homerun to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.  Solarte hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at three.  Harrison hit a solo homerun in the seventh to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead and Stewart hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead and that was the final score.  The Yankees took two out of three in the series and will have Monday off.  They will head to Chicago to take on the Cubs for two and then the White Sox for four.
