New York Yankees are swept by the Oakland Athletics



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 7-3.  Luis Severino started for the Yankees and pitched well, the bullpen wasn't good.  Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits to lead the offense. 

Severino started for the Yankees and pitched six innings giving up seven hits and two runs with no walks and four strikeouts.  Chasen Shreve took his first loss of the season pitching an inning and giving up two hits and two runs with two strikeouts, Johnny Barbato pitched an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk and a strikeout and Kirby Yates pitched an inning giving up a run and two walks and he struck out one. 

Rich Hill picked up his second win of the season pitching six innings and giving up three hits and two runs with one of them being earned.  He walked four and struck out ten.  Fernando Rodriguez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout, John Axford pitched 1 1/3 giving up a hit and striking out one and Liam Hendricks pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one.  Ryan Madson earned his sixth save of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and striking out one. 

Ellsbury had three hits, Starlin Castro had a hit and an RBI and Mark Teixeira drew a walk.  Alex Rodriguez drew two walks, Chase Headley had a hit and Aaron Hicks had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Brett Gardner drew a walk, Austin Romine had a hit and an RBI and Didi Gregorius had a hit.  The Yankees were 3-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Rodriguez had a stolen base and Hicks had an outfield assist. 

Billy Burns had a hit, Mark Canha had a hit and two RBI and Josh Reddick had a hit.  Jed Lowrie had two hits and an RBI, Stephen Vogt had a hit and drew a walk and Chris Coghlan had a hit and two RBI.  Khris Davis had a hit and an RBI, Coco Crisp had two hits, an RBI an drew a walk and Marcus Semien drew a walk.  Reddick hit a double and Canha, Davis, Crisp and Coghlan each hit a homerun.  The Athletics were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Burns, Crisp and Semien each had a stolen base.  Hill committed an error. 

In the second Hicks had an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Lowrie hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  In the bottom of the fourth Romine hit an RBI single giving the Yankees back the lead at 2-1.  In the fifth Canha hit a solo homerun to tie the game at two.  In the seventh Davis and Crisp went back-to-back to give Oakland a 4-2 lead.  In the seventh Castro hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3 but that would be as close as the Yankees came.  In the eighth Coghlan hit a two run homerun to give the A's a 6-3 lead and in the ninth Canha hit a sac fly making it 7-3 which would be the final score.  The Yankees were swept by the A's in the three game series and are 1-5 on their current nine game homestand.  They will begin a three game series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
