New York Yankees blow lead and lose to the Baltimore Orioles


The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday evening.  The game took place at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland and the final score was 5-4.  Masahiro Tanaka started for the Yankees and he was a little better than his first start but still not good.  The Yankees bullpen also blew a lead and Starlin Castro and Ronald Torreyes each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Tanaka pitched five innings giving up six hits and three runs with four walks and five strikeouts.  Adam Warren pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with a strikeout, Tommy Layne pitched giving up a hit and a run and Dellin Betances pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run.  Jonathan Holder pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one. 

Kevin Gausman pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and four runs with three walks and four strikeouts.  Oliver Drake pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk and striking out one, Mychal Givens earned his first win of the season pitching a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Brad Brach pitched an inning with two walks.  Zach Britton pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one.  Britton earned his third save of the season. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew a walk, Austin Romine drew a walk and Matt Holliday had two hits.  Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Castro had two hits and an RBI and Chase Headley drew two walks.  Aaron Hicks had a hit and drew two walks, Torreyes had two hits and two RBI and Hicks hit a double.  The Yankees were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Gardner had a stolen base and Hicks was caught stealing. 

Seth Smith had two hits, Adam Jones had a hit and Manny Machado had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Chris Davis had a hit and drew two walks, Mark Trumbo had a hit and two RBI and Welington Castillo had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Hyun Soo Kim had three hits and an RBI, Machado and Davis each hit a double and the Orioles were 4-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Machado and Trumbo each had a stolen base and Rickard was caught stealing.  Castillo committed an error and Smith had an outfield assist. 

In the second Torreyes hit a two-run single to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth Castillo hit an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.  In the fifth a balk scored a run to make it 3-1 and Castro hit an RBI single to make it 4-1.  In the bottom of the fifth Machado hit an RBI double to make it 4-2 and Trumbo grounded into a force out to make it a 4-3 game.  In the seventh Trumbo hit an RBI single to tie the game at four and Kim hit an RBI single to give the Orioles a 5-4 lead which would be the final score. 

The Yankees have now lost three in a row and will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon.
