The New York Yankees defeated the
St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.
The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the
final score was 3-2. CC Sabathia started
for the Yankees and pitched great, the offense was led by Jacoby Ellsbury who
had two hits.
Sabathia pitched 7 1/3 innings
giving up a run on three hits. He walked
one and struck out six and earned his second win of the season. Adam Warren pitched to two batters and struck
out one and Tyler Clippard earned his first save of the season pitching an
inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts. Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman were both
not available in this game.
Carlos Martinez lost his second game
of the season pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up four hits and three runs
with two of them being earned. He walked
eight and struck out 11. Brett Cecil
pitched to two batters and struck them both out, Miguel Socolovich pitched a
perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Jonathan Broxton pitched an
inning giving up a hit and striking out two.
Brett Gardner had a hit and drew
two walks, Aaron Hicks had an RBI and drew two walks and Chris Carter had a hit
and an RBI. Ellsbury had two hits,
Starlin Castro drew a walk and Chase Headley drew two walks. Greg Bird drew a walk, Ronald Torreyes had a
hit and it was a double. The Yankees
were 1-13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base. Ellsbury and Headley each had a stolen
base.
Matt Carpenter had a hit, Stephen
Piscotty had a hit and an RBI and Jose Martinez had a hit. Matt Adams had a hit, Jhonny Peralta drew a
walk and Greg Garcia drew a walk. Jedd Gyorko
had a hit and an RBI, Gyorko hit a homerun and Piscotty hit a homerun. The Cardinals were 0-4 with runners in
scoring position and left six men on base.
J. Martinez and C. Martinez each committed an error and Molina had a
passed ball.
In the first a wild pitch made it
1-0 Yankees. In the sixth Hicks reached
on a fielder’s choice and it was 2-0 Yankees.
Carter hit an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0. In the eighth Gyorko hit a solo homerun to
cut the lead to 3-1 and Piscotty hit a solo homerun in the ninth to cut the
lead to 3-2.
The Yankees have taken the first two games of
the series and will look for the sweep on Sunday night. Michael Pineda will make the start against
Adam Wainwright.
