New York Yankees defeat the Tampa Bay Rays behind strong debut by Jordan Montgomery


The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 8-4.  Jordan Montgomery made his MLB debut and pitched well.  Kyle Higashioka also made his MLB debut behind the plate.  The offense was led by Starlin Castro, Chase Headley and Aaron Judge who hit another homerun his third in his last three games. 

Montgomery pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up three runs with two of them being earned on five hits.  He walked two and struck out seven.  Bryan Mitchell pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings, Tyler Clippard pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Tommy Layne pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout.  Jonathan Holder pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and Aroldis Chapman pitched 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout and picked up his first save of the season. 

Ian Snell started for the Rays and pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up two hits and two unearned runs with three walks and a strikeout.  Jumbo Diaz took his first loss of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up three hits and three runs with two of them being earned and a walk, Xavier Cedeno didn’t record an out and gave up a hit and an unearned run and Erasmo Ramirez pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits and two runs.  Danny Farquhar pitched an inning with a walk. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI, Aaron Hicks had two RBI and drew two walks and Matt Holliday drew a walk.  Chris Carter had a hit, Castro had two hits and Headley had two hits.  Judge had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk, Pete Kozma drew a walk and Judge hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 2-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Ellsbury had a stolen base, Castro committed an error and Higashioka had a passed ball.  Hicks and Judge each had an outfield assist. 

Steven Souza Jr. had a hit, Kevin Kiermaier had a hit and Evan Longoria drew a walk.  Rickie Weeks Jr. had a hit and two RBI, Corey Dickerson had a hit and an RBI and Derek Norris had a hit.  Daniel Robertson had a hit and drew a walk, Tim Beckham had a hit and Peter Bourjos had a hit.  Mallex Smith had a hit, Souza Jr. and Dickerson each hit a double and Weeks Jr. hit a homerun.  The Rays were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Beckham and Cedeno each committed an error. 

In the first Weeks Jr. hit a two-run homerun to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.  In the fifth Weeks Jr. reached on a fielding error and a run scored.  The play had to be reviewed and was overturned on replay.  In the fifth Hicks drew an RBI walk to cut the lead to 3-1 and a wild pitch made it a 3-2 game.  In the sixth Judge hit an RBI single and Gardner reached on a fielding error to give the Yankees the lead at 4-3.  Ellsbury hit an RBI single and Hicks hit an RBI ground out to extend the lead to 6-3 still in the sixth inning.  In the seventh Judge hit a two-run homerun to push the lead to 8-3.  Dickerson hit an RBI double in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-4 but that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game three of three on Thursday night with the Yankees looking for the sweep.  Luis Severino will make his second start of the season for the Yankees.  Greg Bird is expected back after missing the last few games with an ankle injury and illness.
