The New York Yankees defeated the
St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. The
game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score
was 4-3. Masahiro Tanaka started for the
Yankees and he pitched pretty well.
Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury, Chase Headley and Austin Romine each
had two hits to lead the offense.
Tanaka pitched 6 1/3 innings giving
up five hits and three runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Tanaka earned his first win of the
season. Tyler Clippard pitched to two
batters and retired them both, Dellin Betances pitched a scoreless inning
walking one and striking out the side and Aroldis Chapman earned his third save
of the season pitching an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a
strikeout.
Michael Wacha lost his first game
of the season pitching six innings and giving up nine hits and four runs with
three of them being earned. He walked
two and struck out eight. Matt Bowman
pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Kevin Siegrist pitched an inning
walking two and striking out one.
Brett Gardner drew two walks,
Castro had two hits and two RBI and Ellsbury had two hits. Headley had two hits and drew a walk, Greg
Bird drew a walk and Romine had two hits and an RBI. Ronald Torreyes had a hit, Headley hit a
double and Castro and Romine each hit a homerun. The Yankees were 0-9 with runners in scoring
position and left eight men on base. Ellsbury
and Headley each had a stolen base.
Aledmys Diaz had two hits, Matt
Carpenter had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and Stephen Piscotty drew a
walk. Matt Adams had a hit, Jhonny
Peralta drew a walk and Randal Grichuk had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Jose Martinez had a hit, Diaz, Grichuk,
Martinez each hit a double. Carpenter
hit a homerun. The Cardinals were 1-5 with runners in scoring
position and left seven men on base.
Wong committed an error.
Carpenter hit a two-run homerun in
the first to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first Castro hit a two-run homerun to tie the game
at two. In the second Romine hit a solo
homerun to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth Headley hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-2. In the seventh Grichuk hit an RBI double to
cut the lead to 4-3. The final score
would be 4-3. The two teams will play
game two of three on Saturday afternoon.
