New York Yankees are silenced by the Cleveland Indians in Sonny Gray debut


The New York Yankees were defeated by the Cleveland Indians on Friday night.  The game took place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio and the final score was 5-1.  Sonny Gray started for the Yankees making his debut with the club and pitched well.  The Yankees defense was very spotty especially in the beginning of the game.  The offense didn’t do much other than Gary Sanchez hitting a homerun. 

Gray pitched six innings giving up four hits and four runs with only two of them being earned.  He walked three and struck out six and lost his sixth game of the season.  Chasen Shreve pitched two innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout. 

Corey Kluber pitched a complete game giving up three hits and a run.  He walked one and struck out 11 and earned his ninth win of the season. 

Clint Frazier had a hit, Sanchez had a hit and an RBI and Jacoby Ellsbury drew a walk.  Ronald Torreyes had a hit, C. Frazier hit a double and Sanchez hit a homerun and the Yankees were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base.  Headley, Wade and C. Frazier each committed an error. 

Francisco Lindor had a hit and an RBI, Michael Brantley drew a walk and Jose Ramirez had a hit and an RBI.  Edwin Encarnacion had a hit, Carlos Santana drew a walk and Brandon Guyer had a hit and drew a walk.  Yan Gomes had a hit and two RBI, Gomes hit a double and Lindor hit a homeruna dn the Indians were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. 

IN the first Ramriez hit a two-run single to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.  In the sixth Gomes hit a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0.  In the seventh Sanchez hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 4-1 and in the bottom of the seventh Lindor hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 5-1 which would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of four on Friday night.
