The New York Mets lose to the K.C. Royals in extra innings
The Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 4-3 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Jeremy Hefner started and pitched pretty well for the Mets. The bullpen was good and Josh Satin and Daniel Murphy each had two hits.
Hefner pitched six innings giving up eight hits and three runs. He walked none and struck out six. Gonzalez Germen pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Pedro Feliciano pitched a perfect inning and Scott Atchison pitched two perfect innings striking out one. Scott Rice pitched a perfect inning and David Aardsma pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout. Aardsma lost his first game of the season.
Eric Young Jr. had a hit, Juan Lagares had a hit and Satin had two hits and two RBI. Marlon Byrd drew a walk, Murphy had two hits and an RBI and Justin Turner had a hit and drew a walk. Andrew Brown had a hit, Murphy hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base. Murphy and Lagares each had a stolen base and Byrd was caught stealing.
Bruce Chen pitched six innings giving up four hits and a run. He struck out eight, Luke Hochevar pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and drew a walk, Tim Collins pitched to one batter and struck him out and Aaron Crow pitched an inning giving up three hits and two runs with one of them being earned. He struck out one, Kelvin Herrera pitched three innings giving up a walk and striking out three. Herrera won his fourth game of the season and Greg Holland saved his 29th game of the season. Holland pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Lorenzo Cain had a hit, Eric Hosmer had two hits and Alex Gordon had an RBI. Miguel Tejada had three hits and an RBI, Justin Maxwell had a hit and an RBI and George Kottaras had a hit and an RBI. Chen had a hit, Kottaras hit a homerun and Maxwell hit a homerun. The Royals were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Perez had a passed ball and Gordon had an outfield assist.
Murphy hit a solo homerun in the second giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Kottaras hit a solo homerun in the third to tie the game at one. Gordon hit a sacrifice fly and Tejada hit an RBI single in the third to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the Royals. In the eighth Satin hit a two run single to tie the game at three. Maxwell hit a solo homerun in the 12th inning to give the Royals a 4-3 lead and they would hold on to that lead to win the game.
The Royals record improved to 55-52 and the Mets record fell to 49-59. The two teams will play the rubber game of their three game series on Sunday afternoon.
