The New York Yankees come close but can’t avoid sweep in Chicago


The Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. The final score was 6-5 and the game took place at US Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois. CC Sabathia started and pitched well for the first time in weeks. Mariano Rivera blew the save and the Yankees blew another save in the 12th inning.

Sabathia pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up three runs on five hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out one. David Robertson gave up a hit pitching 2/3 of an inning and struck out one, Rivera blew his third save of the season pitching two innings and giving up two hits and a run with two strikeouts. Adam Warren pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Warren lost his second game of the season.

Brett Gardner had a hit, Alfonso Soriano had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Ichiro Suzuki had a hit. Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk, Robinson Cano had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Vernon Wells had two hits and an RBI. Curtis Granderson drew a walk, Eduardo Nunez had three hits, an RBI and drew two walks and Austin Romine drew two walks. Nunez hit a double; Soriano, Nunez and Cano each hit a homerun. The Yankees were 1-16 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base. Wells, Gardner and Nunez each had a stolen base.

Hector Santiago pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up seven hit and four runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Ramon Troncoso walked the only batter that he faced, Donnie Veal retired the only batter that he faced and Matt Lindstrom pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk. David Purcey pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk, Nate Jones pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts and Addison Reed pitched two innings giving up a walk and striking out two. Dylan Axelrod pitched an inning giving up a hit, a run and a walk with two strikeouts. Axelrod won his fourth game of the season.

Alexei Ramirez had three hits, Alejandro De Aza had two hits and two RBI and Alex Rios had two hits. Paul Konerko had a hit and an RBI, Gordon Beckham had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Adam Dunn had a hit and an RBI. Tyler Flowers had a hit. Konerko and Beckham each hit a double and De Aza hit a triple. Beckham hit a homerun and the White Sox were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Ramirez, Danks and Rios each had a stolen base.

Soriano hit a two run homerun in the first giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Wells hit an RBI single in the third to make it 3-0 Yankees. Nunez hit a solo homerun in the fourth to make it 4-0 Yankees. Beckham hit a solo homerun in the fifth to cut the Yankees lead to 4-1. Konerko hit an RBI double in the seventh and Beckham reached on a fielder’s choice that scored another run. It was now 4-3 Yankees until the ninth when the White Sox tied the game at four. Dunn hit a two out two-strike RBI single. In the 12th Cano hit a solo homerun to make it 5-4 Yankees and in the bottom of the inning the White Sox won the game. De Aza hit a two run triple to win the game 6-5 for the White Sox on a walkoff.
