The New York Yankees shutout the San Diego Padres
The New York Yankees defeated the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. The final score was 3-0 and the game took place at Petco Park in San Diego, California. Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and pitched great. Mariano Rivera picked up another save and Curtis Granderson supplied the offense.
Nova pitched seven shutout innings giving up four hits and a walk. He struck out eight batters. Nova picked up the win his fifth of the season, David Robertson pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect inning to pick up his 35th save of the season.
Brett Gardner drew a walk, Alfonso Soriano had a hit and Granderson had two hits and two RBI. Lyle Overbay had a hit and drew a walk, Eduardo Nunez drew a walk and Jayson Nix had a hit and an RBI. Granderson hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Gardner and Granderson each had a stolen base.
Tyson Ross pitched six innings giving up three hits and two runs with three walks and nine strikeouts. He lost his fifth game of the season, Nick Vincent pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Colt Hynes pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Dale Thayer pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run.
Chase Headley had two hits, Yonder Alonzo had a hit and Will Venable had a hit. Alexi Amarista had a hit, Logan Forsythe drew a walk and Amarista and Venable each hit a double. The Padres were 0-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
Granderson hit a two run homerun in the seventh giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead. In the ninth Nix hit an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game and that would be the final score.
The Yankees record improved to 57-52 and the Padres record fell to 51-60. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon. The two teams have split the first two games of the series.
