New York Yankees fall to the Tampa Bay Rays as offense is silent



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.  The game took place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida and the final score was 5-1.  Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and he didn't pitch very well, Chad Green pitched well in relief.  Chase Headley had two hits and Arod had a hit in a pinch hit at bat. 

Nova pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs with three walks and three strikeouts.  He lost his sixth game of the season.  Green pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up a hit and no runs with three walks and five strikeouts. 

Jake Odorizzi pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up six hits and no runs with no walks and five strikeouts.  He won his fifth game of the season.  Kevin Jepsen pitched to one batter and retired him, Dylan Floro pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and Xavier Cedeno pitched to one batter and retired him.  Erasmo Ramirez pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and Alex Colome pitched 2/3 of an inning and earned his 23rd save of the season. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew a walk, Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and Carlos Beltran had a hit.  Brian McCann had a hit, Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI and Didi Gregorius had a hit.  Headley had two hits, Rob Refsnyder had a hit and Rodriguez had a hit.  The Yankees were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base.  Gregorius committed an error. 

Logan Forsythe had two hits and an RBI, Brad Miller had two hits and Evan Longoria had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Corey Dickerson had a hit and two RBI.  Steve Pearce had a hit and drew two walks, Kevin Kiermaier drew a walk and Steven Souza Jr. had an RBI.  Brandon Guyer drew a walk, Luke Maile drew a walk and Miller and Longoria each hit a double.  Miller hit a triple, Forsythe and Dickerson each hit a homerun.  The Rays were 2-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Guyer and Kiermaier each had a stolen base. 

IN the first Forsythe and Dickerson each hit a solo homerun to put the Rays up 2-0.  In the third Dickerson grounded into a force out and a run scored to push the lead to 3-0 Rays.  Longoria hit an RBI double in the fifth to make it a 4-0 game.  Souza Jr. hit a sac fly and it was 5-0 still in the fifth.  In the eighth Teixeira hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-1 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday evening.
