The New York Mets lose to the Boston Red Sox in extra innings



The New York Mets were defeated by the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 6-4 Boston in ten innings.  Matt Harvey started for the Mets and pitched very well, the bullpen wasn't good and David Wright, Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Harvey pitched six innings giving up two hits and no runs.  He walked one and struck out eight.  Logan Verrett pitched an inning and gave up three hits and three runs with two strikeouts, Tyler Clippard pitched a perfect inning and Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts.  Carlos Torres lost his sixth game of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up four hits and three runs.  Eric O'Flaherty pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Henry Owens pitched five innings giving up five hits and two runs with one of them being earned.  He walked four and struck out six, Heath Hembree pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one, Robbie Ross pitched to one batter and retired him.  Alexi Ogando pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit adn a run with three walks.  Jean Machi pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out one, Tommy Layne won his first game of the season pitching an inning and giving up a walk.  Junichi Tazawa pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with four walks and Craig Breslow pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Juan Uribe drew a walk, Curtis Granderson had an RBI and drew three walks.  Yoenis Cespedes had two walks, Wright had two hits and Michael Cuddyer had a hit and drew a walk.  Wilmer Flores had two hits, Travis d'Arnaud had a hit, two RBI and drew two walks and Ruben Tejada had two hits and drew two walks.  Michael Confort drew a walk, Flores hit a double and the Mets were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base. 

Mookie Betts had a hit, Pablo Sandoval drew a walk and Jeff Rutledge had an RBI.  Xander Bogaerts had two hits and an RBI, David Ortiz had two hits and an RBI and Blake Swihart had two hits and an RBI.  Jackie Bradley Jr. had two hits and two RBI, Betts hit a double and Ortiz, Bradley and Swihart each hit a homerun and the Red Sox were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Bradley and Swihart each had a stolen base.  Castillo committed an error. 

In the fourth d'Arnaud hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the fifth Cuddyer hit an RBI single to make it 2-0 Mets.  In the seventh Ortiz hit a solo homerun to cut the Mets lead to 2-1.  Bradley Jr. hit a two run homerun also in the seventh to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead.  d'Arnaud had an RBI walk to tie the game at three in the seventh.  In the tenth Swihart hit an inside-the-park homerun to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead and Rutledge hit a sac fly and Bogaerts hit an RBI single and it was 6-3 Red Sox.  The Mets scored in the bottom of the tenth on a Granderson RBI walk to make it 6-4 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday afternoon.
