The New York Yankees fall just short in Boston



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.  The game took place at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts and the final score was 4-3 Red Sox.  Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and pitched pretty well.  The Yankees offense had plenty of chances and they just couldn't get the big hit.  Didi Gregorius had four hits and just missed a grand slam in the ninth inning. 

Nova pitched six innings giving up seven hits and three runs with a walk and three strikeouts.  Nova lost his seventh game of the season.  Adam Warren pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout and Chasen Shreve pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two walks and he struck out a batter. 

Eduardo Rodriguez pitched five innings giving up seven hits and two runs with one of them being earned.  He walked three and struck out four and won his eighth game of the season.  Robbie Ross Jr. pitched an inning giving up a walk and struck out one, Alexi Ogando pitched an inning giving up a walk and Junichi Tazawa pitched an inning giving up two hits.  Jean Machi saved his fourth game of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and a run with three walks and two strikeouts. 

Chris Young drew a walk, Stephen Drew had a hit and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk.  Carlos Beltran had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Brian McCann drew three walks and Chase Headley had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks.  Greg Bird had a hit, Gregorius had four hits and an RBI and Brett Gardner had a hit. Beltran hit a double and the Yankees were 4-14 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base. 

Mookie Betts had two hits and two RBI, Pablo Sandoval had an RBI and Xander Bogaerts had a hit and drew a walk.  David Ortiz had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Travis Shaw drew a walk and Ryan Hanigan had a hit.  Jackie Bradley Jr. had three hits, Ortiz and Bradley each hit a double and Betts and Ortiz each hit a homerun.  The Red Sox were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Hanigan and Sandoval each committed an error and Bradley Jr. had an outfield assist. 

In the first Beltran hit a sac fly to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the third Betts hit a two run homerun to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.  Gregorius hit an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game at two.  Ortiz hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth and it was 3-2 Red Sox.  In the seventh Sandoval hit an RBI groundout to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.  In the ninth the Yankees rallied, Headley had an RBI walk to cu the lead to 4-3 but then Bird struck out with the bases loaded and one out and Gregorius just missed a grand slam as it was caught right in front of the wall to end the game. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night.  The series will conclude on Wednesday afternoon and then the Yankees will return home for a long homestand.
